Next Stop turns the journey into the destination. Suburban railway station Essen-West, a nondescript intermediate station, a point of transfer, a connection to locations further away. The tunnel with its white tiles, friendly and bright, is meant to welcome the visitors and speed them on their way again. What will happen if, suddenly, the walls are covered in works of art? Large formats, slightly abstract. That is when Essen-West will become a gateway, the starting point for further next 1 experiences.
Bochum main station. Let’s get something to eat first. Among all the standard kiosks selling the usual kind of fare our eye comes to rest on the Metropolis cinema. Only a single film is showing. In the old ticket booth there are, for the time being, no film posters, just photographs. Admission is free. And on we go to Dortmund. Four trains a day stop at platform 26/31. And a few special trains taking football fans to Bundesliga matches. Why don’t you join us over here, the old railway hut was also converted and turned into a gallery.
Works by four photographers from the Ruhr area will be displayed at these unusual locations. They show what the Ruhr area has to offer. As a motif, a source of inspiration and above all as an exhibition space.
